"I was quite familiar with what could usually be taken as “exotic” to most people, like the urethral sounds, or the violet wand, for example"
Sex stores! I have to admit I was always a bit curious about those since I was a teenager. I believe the first time I went, though, I was about 20 years old, already. At that time, in Brazil, I couldn’t even prospect the life changes I would still go through and about 12 years after that first visit, I actually ended up getting my first 9-5 (I have to admit, it was way more than that!) type of job, at Erotika, one of the biggest sex stores in Montréal, Canada. At that point in life, I was moving from being a loyal client to the attendant.
I guess I could say my first ever toy was a pair of handcuffs I ended up never really using (still wondering why!) and then a bullet-shaped vibrator, gifted by my second boyfriend when I was about 21 years old. My relationship with adult toys evolved after I began my career as a sex performer online. I started by purchasing vibrating dildos, butt plugs then moving to paddles, floggers, rope, strap-ons, strapless strap-ons, tape and well, lots, and LOTS of costumes! I was also exploring several sorts of kinks with my then-lover.
Finally, a couple of years after, then as an attendant, I got to learn so much more about toys since I needed to cover the entire store for costumers and I guess my biggest realization was that sex stores are not just all about the kink, BDSM and sex videos. There were lots of products related to toy maintenance, hygiene, vanilla and love, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and also: a whole lot of toys for penis-owners that I couldn’t even think of until then!
Understanding that there are so many sorts of lubrication, and each falls better in different contexts, for instance, one would probably rather use a thicker lube for anal sex. Also, people really differ in their preferences for textures and there are several options for each taste! I myself, like the water-based-gel type of lubrication but lots of partners I have/had, would say silicon-based is much preferred.
The flashlights and realistic vaginas and buttocks prosthetics were for sure new to me, when I started at the job and I often wished I had a penis to be able to personally try those!
In terms of changes I went through, whilst working at the store, I would say I found myself way more open and curious about the vanilla couple games. I guess it broke down my prejudice and view that it was “cheesy” to really make me understand that those games could really break the ice or even, bring people together in more of an intimate way since they can really explore what works and what doesn’t work throughout those game interactions.
When it comes to the most unusual products I found, I guess, as I said, I was quite familiar with what could usually be taken as “exotic” to most people, like the urethral sounds, or the violet wand, for example. I feel like I did the other way around, in terms of starting my exploration process whilst working in the sex industry and assisting my clients with their very unusual fetishes so, as mentioned, my biggest lessons and “exotic” products were the “vanilla type” of sex toys. The store got me to buy more and more toys, finally and I can’t picture myself as a person that feels “settled” regarding their personal “arsenal”! I’m pretty sure I will keep on buying and trying the new sex toy releases, especially considering my sex educator and coach ambition! What sort of toys would you like me to talk about in here?! xoxo
